Review after the jump
“Lark on My Go-Kart” album in stores april 20th…4-20
This is my quick review of his album after a couple listens .Not sure what to think of this white kid from the suburbs. Don’t get me wrong his mixtape with DJ Drama & Canon was certified dope but this wasn’t deserving of the internet hype. I mean a songs like “Cartoon Chick” and “Roth Boys” should have been on the album instead o songs like “She Don’t Wanna Man” even though it is an infectious tune. “Be By Myself” feat. Cee-Lo is one song that shows asher’s lyrical potential, which flows perfectly with the trackaside fom the ‘blumpkin’ style of beats that feature greatly on this album . The second part of the album seems to have more feeling to it rather than jus bein a pop-rap soulja boy album.
“As I Em” is the track where Asher addresses his “similarities” to Eminem -
“cuz we have the same complexion and similar voice inflection,
its easy to see the pieces and reach for that connection,
every minute, each hour of everyday,
im constantly on the fence defending my own name,
explaining we are not the same,
not much that i can say, except that im sick of it, ”
it’s a powerful track where we hear asher roth voice his opinions on the matter. He also gives props to Eminem on various occasions.
“now dont get it twisted, ive definatley benefitted,
its like suddenly everyone wants to hear what ive been spittin,
its so different, the image they dont get it,
its simple im just a kid who wants to rap to make a livin,
but Em was in it way before i committed ,
and his lyrics were the shit so i really gotta come with it,
but each critics been pickin apart my writins,
and if its not up to par then ashers par is just a gimmick,
is it my fault must i be more convincing?”
Unlike Eminem who came insulting his his mother, Mr. Roth comes out with an RnBish feeling track called “His Dreams”
The last track on the album is “Fallin’” an upbeat track not to disimilliar to Kanye’s “Family Business” This is what Asher Roth is about and where he hopefully will be in in his sophmore album.
In conclusion Asher is talented yes but at this point not the next eminem , he still needs to grow and experiment with different beats to perfect his style but nonetheless a good debut with out much backing by the majors unlike that other white dude had.
